J'avais d'abord pensé prendre le Pondicherry Express qui relie Pondy et Chennai, au départ de la gare d'Egmore. Mais l'agent de voyage de mon hôtel m'a dit: "Nous avons un mini-bus privé qui peut vous y amenez". Les horaires étant plus pratiques, j'ai dit oui. Tout à bien commencé et le voyage s'est trouvé être des plus agréables. Et puis, sans prévenir, on s'est arrété à Auroville, le grand ashram fondé il y a plusieurs décennies par Sri Aurobindo et son associée française, "la Mère"! Une jolie forêt et au milieu de tout ça un dome géodésique, le matrimandir, censé être l'âme de la communauté. Bon, à part une charmante demoiselle en 'churidar kameez' et la belle forêt bien verte en question, l'intérêt de la chose a été des plus limité en ce qui me concerne. Je respecte l'intéret des indiens pour la chose mystique, mais les ashrams et autres centres de méditation gourou-blah-blah pour occidentaux en mal de 'signification cosmique' et de 'vérité absolue', moins j'en vois mieux je me porte!!!
Pondicherry par contre, ah! quel agréable séjour!!! La partie "française" de la ville est superbement sauvegardée, tout est immaculé, et la ville indienne est propre et des moins chaotique de toute mon expèrience indienne! J'y reviendrai avec plaisir!

At first, I had planned to take the Pondicherry Express out of Egmore station in Madras. But the travel agent at the hotel suggested a private mini-bus. That schedule being more convenient than the train, I joined in. It all started quite nicely, and then all of a sudden as we neared Pondy, the driver/guide told us we were going to stop at Auroville, the city/ashram founded by sri Aurobindo and his partner "the Mother" several decades ago. I didn't see too many dwellings, but we walked through a fine evergreen forest till we reached a golden geodesic dome, the Matrimandir, supposed to be the heart and mind of the community. All well and good, but I must say that it all was of a very limited interest for me. I respect and understand the importance of the mystical thing for Indians, but the "ashram and meditation" culture aimed at westerners thirsty for 'cosmic meaning' and 'absolute truth' leaves me cold, and the less I see of that the better off I am in my travels.
Pondicherry on the other hand was a most pleasant little town. The French part is superbly preserved and immaculate, the Indian side is also very clean and a whole lot less chaotic than any city I visited in India! It's with great pleasure I'll come back to visit again!!
